Why Gen Z Sees TikTok Comment Sections as the New Search Engine

by Samantha McDaris

For the last few decades, people have been turning to Google for every question they have. Whether it was a question about food recommendations or shopping advice, people knew they could rely on Google. For Gen Z, that’s all starting to shift. With today’s media, we can search the web while looking at the comment section on a TikTok post. It’s changing the way people can learn and get news sources.

Comment sections became the most reliable search engine because they are instant opinions or questions from the audience. For example, if there is a product thats over hyped, the audience will talk about it, or if there are hidden fees somewhere, someone will find it. It’s also common for fake news to be called out in the comment section. Traditional search engines often share information, but comment sections can share an experience andthat’st what a young audience wants to see most.

Another important factor is authenticity. Google results are often packed with sponsored articles or outdated information, but in a comment section, the advice can feel like it’s coming from someone you know. When people ask questions like, “Where is this from?”, they get a real, unfiltered answer. This transparency has turned comments into a great decision making took. It’s created a space to find advice like beauty routines, product reviews, travel tips, and even college advice.

Now that brands are finally noticing, companies are creating content that suggests users ask questions so that the comment section becomes a useful page to answer questions. Other brands are carefully monitoring their comments because they want to find out what the audience really thinks about their brand. This shift is also changing influencer culture by allowing creators who reply to comments regularly to be seen as trustworthy.

Relying on TikTok comment sections does come with its downsides. Not every answer can be accurate, informed, or kind. Misinformation can spread when it comes across as someones personal experience. It’s also challenging for viewers to tell the difference between a sarcastic joke and the truth within a comment section. The big challenge for Gen Z is learning when a comment can be helpful or ifit ise misleading.

There is still no question on weather or not a comment section can serve a deeper meaning than entertainment. They are creating hubs for finding your niche community, answering questions as a mini search engine, or creating reviews. They can shape what trends will be sticking, what products are selling out first, and which creators are going viral.
