The Art of Being Nonchalant on Instagram

By Sadie Schumaker

Nothing bothers me more than someone who overshares on Instagram. Yes, I’m aware the purpose is to share bits and pieces of your life, but emphasis on bits and pieces. That doesn’t mean everything. In a world where everyone is posting every meal, every breakup, and every world crisis, being nonchalant on Instagram has become a skilled art. If you want to master the art of looking effortlessly cool (without deleting the app altogether), here’s how to do it. Or at least how I would do it.

First, let’s be clear: being nonchalant does not mean being sloppy. I don’t believe in posting a carousel of low-quality photos and calling it a day. There’s a difference between effortless and careless. You can and should absolutely edit your photos, but the key is to make it look natural, not overworked.

But the real heart of nonchalance is simple: you don’t need to share everything. Not every moment of your life deserves a place on your grid. People who post every day (or even worse, multiple times a day) completely lose the sense of intention that makes a feed interesting. When every detail of someone’s life is online, nothing feels special. The mystery disappears. And honestly, the appeal does too.

The most compelling Instagram users are the ones who understand restraint. They post occasionally, not constantly. They let life happen without narrating it to the entire internet. And because they share less, their posts feel more meaningful and more worth looking at. The less predictable your posting is, the more nonchalant it feels. Post when you have something worth sharing. Not because you feel like you “should.”

Not Every App Needs the Same You

This is where TikTok becomes the contrast. TikTok practically rewards oversharing. The algorithm really only pushes out your posts if you’re feeding it constantly. On TikTok, posting daily or multiple times a day is normal. The platform is built around volume. But Instagram isn’t. Instagram is slower. More curated. More aesthetic. Treating Instagram like TikTok ruins the vibe completely. Not every platform needs the same version of you.

Here’s where Snapchat becomes your best friend. Snapchat is the ideal place for those “behind-the-scenes” moments. The unfiltered, unedited, unimportant parts of your life. Late-night chaos? Snap. Random car ride? Snap. A joke only your two closest friends will get? Snap. That’s what the app is for. That separation keeps your IG clean, intentional and way more interesting.

Even your Instagram stories should follow this logic. A few selective moments—not a 40-clip documentary of the concert you went to. Stories are for glimpses, not full recaps. If you’re dying to share everything? Again… that’s what Snapchat is for.

Being nonchalant on Instagram ultimately comes down to restraint. The less you share, the cooler and better your profile looks. The more intentional you are, the more your posts stand out. You don’t owe the internet your entire life. Share the highlights, keep the rest for yourself (or your private Snapchat story), and let your profile breathe.

Of course all of this is opinion, so you don’t have to take anything I say to heart. I would just suggest that before you hit post, ask yourself, “is this really something the whole world needs to know?” because nothing bothers me more than someone who overshares on Instagram.
