If you take a moment to look through the highest performing post on Instagram you may notice that almost always they have one thing in common: the caption offers value. They tend to not be very text heavy, or cookie cutter, but something that people want to return to, share and remember. Saves and shares are powerful engagement signals that tell the algorithm and audience that your post is relevant to their interests. If you want to learn to write social media captions that drive engagement for your brand, follow these steps.
Step 1: You NEED a strong hook. The first few seconds are crucial, you must appeal to the viewer immediately if you want them to stick around and consume your content. A strong hook grabs the attention of viewers by offering insights, solving a problem or relating to your audience. Try phrasing like, “Before you plan a tasting trip, read this” or “Three things I wish I had learned sooner”. These give viewers a reason to stop and keep reading. Your captions hook should signal to the viewer that what follows will be worth reading.
Step 2: Caption length should correlate to the type of content that you are posting. According to Mash Creative CO, Short captions (under 150 words) are ideal for promotional content and reels, where as medium length captions (150-300 words) work best storytelling, customer testimonials and brand messaging and lastly, long captions (700-2,200 words) are ideal for educational content.

Step 3: Include hashtags and keywords in order to expand the reach of your post. Hashtags and Keywords make your post more easily searchable and gets more eyes on your post, Hashtags allow your post to be seen by users with similar interests. Although be careful when picking what hashtags to use. You may be tempted by trending hashtags but often the most used hashtags are not always the ones that will get your post higher engagement. I recommend doing some research on the highest performing posts of your brands competitors and seeing what hashtags they may be using. According to Adobe, “More specific hashtags also help you more closely target your audience, boosting your relevancy on their feeds.”
Lastly, Step 4: Have an intentional call to action. Instead of common Instagram phrasing like “Comment your thoughts below” try a more engaging and natural sound prompts like “which recipe would you try first” or “share this with someone that needs it”. When calls to action feel more natural people are more likely to follow it.
A strong caption doesn’t simply sit under a post. It shapes that way that people will interact with your content. Leading with a strong hook, matching the length of your caption to the type of content, using keywords to make your post more discoverable and including a call to action that feels natural, gives your audience a reason to engage with your post. Social captions are a layer of strategy and when they are written with intention they can turn a simple post into a something that people comment on, share and save.
Hi Fern!
I think your post is a great breakdown of caption strategy. I also think having a natural call to action is super important. You also need a strong hook 100%. Overall, I really enjoyed your post!
Hi Fern! This is a fantastic and actionable guide to writing engaging social media captions. I especially liked the emphasis on ensuring the caption offers value to the reader, which truly drives those important save and share signals. The tip about matching the caption length to the specific type of content is also incredibly helpful for maximizing relevance. Focusing on a natural sounding call to action is a smart way to encourage audience interaction without sounding overly salesy.
Hi Fern,
This guide is great, normally reading guides annoys me and its hard to stay focused, but this one is written so nicely and concisely! I liked how you gave alternatives to what people might be inclined to write instead of just saying “dont do this, dont do that” you provide some really great structure and ways to make it feel natural. 🙂
