How to utilize Pinterest as a tool for personal or professional plans

By Emily Querry.

Since middle school, I have been obsessed with building mood boards on Pinterest and using the platform for creative inspiration. Since then, I have found ways to utilize Pinterest as a tool for my schedule, school, social life, hobbies, and plans. My lifestyle has honestly improved since using Pinterest for more than leisurely scrolls.

Using Pinterest as a filing system

Personally, I have 3.3k pins saved throughout my 53 Pinterest boards. That’s a lot of pins to keep up with. Thankfully, each board serves a unique purpose, and most boards contain sections.

Keeping sections within boards is like keeping files within folders on a drive. Whether you use Pinterest for decor inspiration or for your post-grad game plan, including sections will keep your boards organized. Keeping an organized structure is the most important way to make your Pinterest manageable as a tool.

Here are a few examples of my boards and the sections within them:

Fits (Outfit inspiration)

  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Chillin’
  • Church

2024 (Plans and vision for the year)

  • Vision
  • Time Management Techniques
  • Senior Season
  • Plan for Post-Grad

Inspo (Self-improvement and building my social media)

  • Lifestyle
  • Remember
  • Stories
  • My Feed

Party (I love themed parties and hosting!)

  • Brunch Dates
  • Turning Twenty
  • Camping Trip
  • Margaritaville

Wedding (Did I mention I have been planning my wedding since middle school?)

  • Put a Ring on it
  • Bach & Bridal Party
  • Planning Ahead
  • Bouquet

Hopefully those examples helped portray how you can use Pinterest to save ideas that you’ll use this week or even in a few years. While Pinterest is known for its visual aspect, there is a wide range of texts, charts, and plans for all different topics.

How to build boards

First: You’re going to pick what your board is for. Do you want to redo your bedroom? Maybe you want to plan your next vacation? Perhaps you’re living my dream and you just got engaged and want to spend the rest of your evening planning the next five years. Whatever you want! It’s up to you!

Second: Let’s start brainstorming! Get in the search bar and be broad with your searches. But don’t spend too long on a search; these initial pins will help you decide what sections you want. Once you feel like you have a few pins for each area of your topic, you’re set!

Third: Now that you’ve got a few pins on your board, you can start thinking about how you want to categorize your pins. That bedroom makeover board may need sections for wall decor, bedding, desk layout, and closet organization. Your vacation board could probably use sections for packing ideas, excursions, lodging, and travel tips.

Fourth: You can start organizing those pins into their appropriate sections or leave some out if you wish. How you organize your board is completely up to you! If I feel a pin is specific to a section, I’ll add it. If not, I’ll let it hang out to create an overall vibe.

Final: There are a few options for how you can continue to add to your board. My go-to is finding my favorite pins and scrolling under them to find similar pins. Pinterest will also create a “More Ideas” button, intended to suit your board. And of course, you can jump back into that search bar.

Hope you find many fun ways to utilize Pinterest! Happy pinning!

  6. Hi Emily. As somebody that is also absolutely obsessed with Pinterest, it’s so interesting learning how a brand can use it professionally. I loved learning about how you personally use the app and it’s so interesting how different people use the same app so differently (especially such a simple app)! For example as somebody that loves creative storytelling and creative writing my boards are often used for character and setting inspiration! I also use the app a lot for drawing references and drawing tips. From a pr perspective I’ve also used the app to make boards to get inspired to create social media posts for brands and organizations!
