TikTok Tactics: A Guide for Aspiring Influencers and Young Professionals

By Carlie Esses

In the past few years, TikTok has taken the world by storm. The platform offers a creative and engaging space for sharing short-form video content to the world. Whether you’re a student hoping to showcase a talent or a young professional looking to build your personal brand, mastering TikTok can be a huge game-changer. This guide will walk you through the most important steps of creating content that will grow your audience and brand as a whole.

Getting Started on TikTok:

Starting off can be difficult, but the first step you will want to take is to create an engaging profile. Choose a catchy username, upload a profile picture, and write a short yet attention-grabbing bio that reflects your personality. Next, become familiar with the platform itself. Spend time exploring its features, trends, and community norms. You can even start following relevant creators that align with your values and interests. This will help give you inspiration and show you different ways of producing content.

Understanding the TikTok Algorithm:

Dive into the For You Page (FYP): TikTok’s algorithm gathers content based on user preferences, engagement, and trends. So, whatever content you interact with the most will be on your own feed. You will also need to identify who your target audience is, and create content based on the  interests of that specific group.

Tip: Utilize trending sounds and popular hashtags: Keep an eye on trending sounds and hashtags within your audience and incorporate them into your videos to increase reach.

Creating Captivating Content:

You will want to develop a consistent posting schedule and regularly upload new content to increase your chances of appearing on users’ FYP. Given TikTok’s preference for shorter videos, try to captivate viewers within the first few moments to ensure their engagement. Above all of the technical aspects, remember to be yourself and showcase your personality. Personality, humor, and storytelling is what will connect with your audience on a personal level.

Growing Your Following:

You will want to cross-promote your TikTok profile on other platforms. Share your TikTok videos on other social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube to attract followers from other existing networks. Take advantage of features like live streams, TikTok Creator Marketplace, and TikTok Ads to expand your reach and attract new followers.

By following these steps and staying true to yourself, you have the power to showcase your creativity, build your personal brand, and connect with a global audience. TikTok offers different outlets for creativity and expansion, leaving it to those willing to seize the opportunities.

  1. Carlie, very insightful blog! I love how you formatted the blog by bolding the subheaders of each section. Great image choice too, it showcases what you are explaining how to do in your blog – content creation! I also like how you mentioned the built-in TikTok resources like TikTok Creator Marketplace and TikTok ads. It shows you know how to properly utilize a platform like TikTok for content creation. I might have to try out your advice for myself too, my friend followed these steps and now she’s got a TikTok following, so it can be done!

  2. Hi Carlie! These are great points for TikTok. I think this is a great platform that allows users to get super connected to similar people which is a great way to be social with people that you don’t know. It will be interesting to see what happens with TikTok in the next few months with the court situation.

  3. Hi Carlie! I thought this was the perfect guide for young influencers. I think as younger, smaller accounts on social media, we shy away from doing growth-focused projects and your post/advice motivates people to get going even if it’s a smaller result.

  4. Hi Carlie! Your article content is engaging. I appreciate how you emphasized the importance of showcasing personality on TikTok. It’s true that many creators attempt to create a new persona for their online presence, which often leads to content that feels inauthentic. Great work!
