After Olivia Rodrigo released “Expectations” on June 12, 2026, as part of her album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, fans had overwhelmingly positive reactions to the track. Interestingly, Olivia’s queer fans took part in the lyrics and shared how the song resonated with them, despite Rodrigo not publicly identifying as queer and the song originally centering on her experiences dating men. Videos and reaction images featured the singer standing behind various sapphic and queer flags, often paired with partial lyrics from the song.
Rodrigo’s team did not directly engage with these memes in any significant way. However, on October 13, 2026, a collaboration with lesbian artist Chappell Roan was announced. While there is no evidence that Rodrigo’s team pursued this collaboration because of the fan’s response to the original song, the announcement sparked conversations about audience engagement and the relationship between fan communities and their artists.
Fans response to the announcement:
The decision to feature Roan on the remix was not a random choice. The two artists have a very well established friendship, having shared studio time and performed live together throughout the years. They are also both signed under Universal Music Group. Rather than having Olivia release a version of the song with queer-aligned altered lyrics, the collaboration brought a queer artist into the project and gave Roan the opportunity to contribute her own verse and perspective onto the song.
In a recent interview, Roan expressed excitement about the opportunity, noting that she didn’t know “if everyone would be down to have a fully queer verse on their song.” Despite taking a break from music production earlier in the year, she was excited to participate in the project. Her contribution gives the remix a different perspective and expands on the themes of the original song in a very natural way.
Interpretations of “Expectations,” and the remix offered another way for that interpretation to exist within Rodrigo’s creative world. Although we cannot assume the fan response inspired the collaboration, the overlap between the two is worth examining. The remix highlights the value of understanding how audiences connect with and interpret an artist’s work. Rodrigo has demonstrated a strong relationship with her audience, and this collaboration is an example of how artists can create opportunities for fans to feel represented and included in their creative projects. More broadly, the music industry can learn from this by paying attention to the conversations happening within fan communities and recognizing that audience engagement goes beyond likes, streams, and views. Sometimes, the strongest connections come from understanding what a song means to the people listening to it.
