Netflix’s Most Watched Movie — Is a K-Pop Animation?

By Sadie Schumaker

If you haven’t heard of K-Pop Demon Hunters, it’s time for you to come out from the rock you’ve been living under, because you might be missing out on history. Released on Netflix in Summer of 2025, this animated film took the world by storm. The movie blends the glitz of K-pop with fantasy action, following a girl group who fight demons with the power of music. On paper, it sounds like a fun kids movie idea. But the results? Historic.

I stumbled across the movie this past summer and decided to give it a try despite the semi-cringy title. I had already heard a few of the songs that had popped up on my TikTok “For You” page and found them to be surprisingly good. It was also featured in Netflix’s Top 10 list, and I usually enjoy the shows and movies I pick from there.

Within just three months, the film broke records on Netflix, becoming the most watched movie on the streaming service. In case you had any doubts, that’s  absolutely insane for an animated movie and a clear sign that audiences of all ages want content that’s visually stunning, has catchy tunes and is culturally relevant.

Why It’s Breaking Records

One of the main reasons the film blew up is because of its soundtrack. K-pop fans are known for their dedication, and the songs from the movie did not disappoint. The lead single, Golden, hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and stayed there (currently still in the top ten as of me writing this), making history as the first time a movie soundtrack achieved multiple top-ten spots since 1978 (Billboard).  Fans weren’t just watching the film, but streaming the songs on repeat.

Another factor is Netflix itself. By releasing the film on its platform, the studio was able to tap into the global streaming audience, giving fans everywhere immediate access. The film stayed in Netflix’s Top 10 for 15 consecutive weeks, a record for an original animated film. That kind of visibility, combined with social media hype, was the perfect recipe for it to go viral.

Okay…And?

If you scrolled through TikTok or X (formerly Twitter) in the weeks after the release, you probably saw edits, cosplay transformations, or people ranking their favorite songs from the soundtrack. The hashtag #KpopDemonHunters racked up billions of views, and people who had never been into or listened to K-pop became obsessed or at least intrigued.

It’s kind of wild to think that a streaming movie could create the same kind of global event energy as a major concert tour, but that’s exactly what happened. As someone who spends way too much time online, I think this success says something bigger about how we consume media. Netflix’s success with K-Pop Demon Hunters proves that the future of entertainment needs to be more  community-driven. Audiences don’t just want to watch any more, they want to be a part of it. Through this, the fans are able to keep the momentum alive long after the credits roll.

  1. Hello Sadie,
I really enjoyed reading what you had to say about KPOP Demon Hunters. I have not yet see the movie but you are right that it has taken social media by storm. I have never seen so much content about a movie that is not out in theaters and is made for a younger audience. I think that the music aspect of it all is very interesting and I think the way you compared it to a concert is spot on. The way that they managed to get so many people to feel like they were involved in the movie or the messaging behind the movie is a strong example of the power of social media! Thank you for your words!

  2. I loved this topic! I never thought I’d find myself watching a K-pop movie, but I recently watched it with my roommates and ended up loving it. K-pop is becoming so popular, and I was even surprised to see it featured in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more of it.

  3. Hi Sadie! This is a topic I was hoping someone would write about because I have yet to understand what made this movie such a big deal. I have seen so many ads and promotions for it on social media, but I am not someone who is typically into animated movies or K-pop. I totally agree with you that entertainment needs to be community-driven. With so much media out there to consume, there are so many times when there is just too much to choose from. For example, The Summer I Turned Pretty was something that was fun and engaging to watch because you got to see how all the other viewers online were going to react to each episode. I loved this. Great job!

  4. Nice post Sadie! I can’t believe how popular this movie was. Some people at work were talking about it and how many times they have watched it already and I never saw any kind of media for it at all. I have never dove into K-Pop at all but I have been considering it just because of how many good things I have heard about this movie.

  5. Hi Sadie! I really enjoyed this post! Your perspective on the soundtrack component of the movies success is so important! Having a ‘version’ of the movie that can be streamed on audio through any music platform is a great way to boost interest and awareness of the movie, especially when the songs are good.
