How To Stand Out On Social Media While Staying True To Yourself

By: Lily McNeal

As social media has become a competitive world, it’s sometimes hard to stay true to yourself through your social media presence. In this post you will find tips on how to grow your chosen social media platform, while maintaining your personality and values.

Find your niche. Pick a topic or category that you are passionate about and can share a lot about. Pick something that is individual to you, and something that aligns with your interests and values. You should also have a certain level of expertise on it to stand out among the many other people on social media platforms.

Pick the best platform. Focus your energy on creating one or two really strong social media platforms. Each platform is used for different reasons. TikTok is often used to make short and fun videos about entertainment, fitness, cooking/baking, everyday life, etc. Instagram is often used to display aesthetic photos focusing on fashion, beauty/makeup, food, travel, life, etc. YouTube is often used to make longer videos/vlogs about people’s lives or interests.

Engage with your audience and get to know them. Create content that your audience wants to see while still staying true to you. Build connections with the people engaging in your content, and let them know you are interested in what they are sharing as well. Treat people as people and not as followers. Be honest about the content you are sharing and make sure it aligns with the self brand you are trying to create.

Produce good work/quality over quantity. Make content that you are proud of and put a lot of effort into. Your audience wants to see work you feel good about. Social media is a representation of yourself so show your audience that you value the content that you are creating. “Don’t try to be someone you’re not because you will only disappoint yourself and your followers” (LinkedIn). Make sure that the content you post reflects the type of person you are and upholds your values and the values of the community you are working to build.

Have Fun with it, and don’t take it too seriously. Don’t put pressure on yourself to make your social media platform or content perfect. People like to see a real person when they look at their screens. And most importantly stay true to yourself, and your interests. Social media can be very intimidating but people want to see a genuine person sharing their interests or hobbies.
