Our Own Royal Wedding – Why People Can’t Get Enough of Sofia Richie’s Wedding

By: Sophia LaVigna

Like the rest of the world, I have been mesmerized by what I like to call “my version of the royal wedding”. Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge tied the knot this past weekend with a wedding fit for a princess. The star-studded wedding occurred in the exclusive French Riviera hotel, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, and had me drooling with every post I saw.

I’ve always been a girl who fangirls over celebrities, but this wedding was straight out of Vogue. Literally. Richie’s wedding attire was first revealed in a Vogue Youtube video where viewers got an invitation into her final fitting in Paris, France with Channel. Each of the three dresses were dreamy and elegant, truly a bride’s dream.

Sofia, daughter of singer-songwriter Lionel Richie, and Elliot, music executive, got engaged in Aprill of 2022 surrounded by white roses and instantly caught people’s attention. Richie has an elegance to her that draws people in. The couple, while semi-active on social media, keep their relationship private from the outside world. They give just enough to keep you engaged but keep you curious. You’ll see romantic photos of their New Years Eve trip, but they don’t overshare.

As the big day approached, fans were eating up the content. Richie started a TikTok account that has gained over 690 thousand followers in just over a week. She jumped on the “Get Ready With Me” trend, and showed followers her simple makeup routine as she prepped for wedding week activities. Providing a first hand look inside her wedding week, Richie somehow made a million dollar wedding feel like it’s for the girl next door.

Her day-to-day style has turned her into the next “it girl”. Search her name on any social media platform and you will find creators recreating her looks with pieces they have in their own closets. Her outfits have a modesty and chic-ness to them that give an old money feel. Like she’s exploring Milan on the weekdays and frolicing around the Hamptons on the weekends.

At 24-years-old, Richie had a dating history that the media has eaten up. She dated Kourtney Kardasian’s ex, Scott Disick, for three years. At the time, she had a much younger style- club-like mini dresses, casual day time pieces, etc. The dramatic change, though she’s rocked every stage, has made “wifey” dressing trendy. At this point, she could wear a trash bag and I would probably want to buy it.

In a time of cancel-culture, it will be interesting to see how long Richie’s rise to the top will last. The world is quick to turn women against each other and nit-pick at celebrities every move. My hope is that Richie will continue to be a fashion icon for my generation. I find inspiration in not only her outfits, but in the classy way she presents herself.

  1. I feel like I have been seeing news revolving around this wedding more than I have seen any other news headlines. It really makes me think about the huge role that entertainment plays in today’s media, which is a bit concerning to me if I’m going to be honest because I feel like I have to go out of my way to read “real” news. It’s amazing to me how invested people are in a celebrities wedding day and everything that goes into it from the dress reveal to the venue.

  2. I have been seeing her wedding on my feed a lot for the last week. I saw an article where it stated that Riche’s wedding created the buzz that the Kourtney Kardashian wedding hoped to do. The publicity success of this wedding could be attributed to the real-time updates and easy access for fans.

  3. Hi Sophia!
I also saw a lot on social media about this wedding! I think it’s interesting how big celebrity weddings are and how much money goes into them. I was honestly surprised by how viral her wedding was because I feel like she hasn’t been in the news a lot lately. I also thought her dresses were beautiful and I like how she is a very mature and classy style. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Hi Sophia
Whenever Vogue covers something I will make sure to pay attention to it. However, Vogue and Sofia Richie both have my 100% attention. Social media really offers an outlet for every event, aspect of life, and topic. Creating a new account purely for her wedding and her “Get ready with me” is genius! As you mentioned, with cancel culture being so prevalent, if she ever gets canceled this part is separate and the specific account can be deleted, instead of her needing to delete her whole platform.

  5. It is always so interesting seeing which event stands out to certain generations. At first, I was honestly shocked to see that this was the wedding that would go so viral considering Sofia Richie was not as prevalent on social media and just joined tik tok days before her wedding. I feel it definitely has to do with the couture aspect of the event and its closeness to the brand Chanel.

  6. I work as a bridal stylist and thought this was really interesting as this was fully an online event for audiences, but definitely blends into people’s real lives. I think it is so interesting to see how people take inspiration from this, and how people have unique weddings every day but only some are seen this publically, and therefore only some make an impact style-wise.

  7. Hi Sophia! I really enjoyed reading your article. I thought it was fun and engaging. I loved following all of the wedding content, as well as their honeymoon and “normal” life content afterwards. I find it very interesting to see how fashion treads have already started to change after Sofia Richie was named an it girl, and I excited to see how the trends continue to change over this summer.
