Why Students and Young Professionals Should Use Instagram to Build Their Personal Brand

By Quinci Miller

It’s no secret that Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms since it was created in 2010. Instagram started out as a social media based app used for friends and family to communicate by posting pictures and videos on their feed for each other to see. You have the ability to view and comment on your friends posts and see what they are up to in their everyday lives, even if you don’t see each other in person as often. What some people may not realize is that you can also use Instagram as a way to grow your own personal brand.

Determine your personal brand.

Before you begin building and promoting your personal brand on Instagram, you must solidify what it is that your brand entails. What are your personal values? What do you want your audience to know about you? What is the goal or outcome you wish to achieve with your personal brand? If you don’t have a checklist of expectations that you want out of your personal brand before you launch, you won’t have a starting point.

Consistency is key.

Once you have officially launched your personal brand for everyone to see on your Instagram account, it is extremely important to be consistent with your posting habits. Your audience looks forward to viewing and interacting with your content whether it be posts, stories or reels. Being consistent with posting not only entertains your current audience, but also has the potential to reach new audiences that may have the same interests and values as you.

Include popular hashtags in your captions.

Hashtags are one of the most important steps in showcasing your personal brand to particular audiences. Using relevant hashtags allows your content to be seen by a wider variety of people and audiences. When you use a relevant hashtag, your content will be seen in that particular search of the hashtag topic.

Audience engagement.

In order to keep your audience engaged and interested with your content, it is important that you engage back. Communicating with your audience by responding to direct messages, comments and even occasional follow backs will create a positive relationship with your followers.

By following this particular set of steps in creating a personal brand presence on Instagram, you will have the necessary guidance to create and start promoting your brand. You can begin posting content regarding the introduction of your brand and what you stand for and the particular audience who shares the most similarities with your brand will soon come to you.
