How to Stand Out in the Podcast World

By Mia Barnett

As an avid podcast listener, I’ve picked up on the elements that make a podcast sound professional and keep me hooked, versus those I can only listen to for thirty seconds. Since it seems like everyone is getting into podcasts these days, what makes some stand out from the rest? Here are a few observations I’ve gathered along my listening journey.

A Podcast Must Provide Value

Podcasts stand out when they bring fresh perspectives or ideas that audiences haven’t heard before. In a world of oversaturated media, the best podcasts succeed by exploring unique topics and offering unfiltered conversations. Unlike other media platforms, podcasts provide everyday people the freedom to share ideas without corporate oversight. Personally, I find podcasts an engaging way to learn; especially in the health and wellness space. In these podcasts, I’ve heard individuals share how they treated certain ailments or implement new practices that elevate their health which are different from the conventional advice we hear from medical institutions. Humans are curious creatures always striving to learn, so whenever podcasters capitalize on this curiosity by providing new information, it can create momentum and leave the listener wanting more. Of course, it’s important for listeners to use discernment on the credibility of the information and the source sharing it.

Podcasters who are authentically and unapologetically themselves can carve out their niche.

Podcasters who embrace their identity and stay genuine often cultivate a loyal niche fanbase. Authenticity and confidence in their beliefs foster a strong connection with listeners, who can quickly sense when someone is being insincere. Even if audiences don’t agree with a podcaster’s content, they’re more likely to respect and engage with someone who is unapologetically themselves. Take Alex Cooper, host of Call Her Daddy, for example. Whether you love or dislike her bold, outspoken personality and sexually explicit content, it’s undeniable that her authenticity has built a devoted following. Her audience trusted her decision to evolve the podcast, remaining intrigued and supportive as she made changes. When podcasters trust their instincts, whether it’s bringing on a controversial guest or adjusting their content, their core audience often sticks with them, and sometimes, they attract an entirely new fanbase.

Production Matters

From personal experience, some influencers create great content on TikTok or Instagram, but their podcasts fall short because the production quality doesn’t measure up to more solely focused podcasters. As podcasting evolves, staying competitive requires a solid production setup. Investing in a quality microphone and equipment can make a huge difference. High production standards demonstrate a seriousness and pride in their work, making listeners more inclined to tune in and value what they have to say.

Mix it Up!

Diversity of content is essential for maintaining a podcast’s fanbase. Listeners return each week to hear fresh perspectives and new information from their favorite podcaster. However, if a podcast is always solo, it can become monotonous, as the host risks staying in an echo chamber without the dynamic discourse a guest can bring. On the other hand, relying too heavily on guests might weaken the connection with the audience, as fans may feel they’re not getting to know the host personally. Striking a balance is key to keeping audiences on their toes. When content is varied, there’s an assurance they’ll keep coming back for more. Even If one format performs better, changing things up prevents boredom and keeps the podcast engaging.
