Coachella. For the Music or Outfits?

By Mackenzie Knutson

With weekend 1 of the infamous Coachella Music Festival coming to an end, I want to address the two halves of it. Music and outfits.

There are festival fanatics that attend every year and embrace the music and environment, but then there are newbies and influencers getting invited by brands to attend festivals where they may not even care about who performs.

What do they care about then? The fashion of Coachella.

Dating back to the origin of Coachella, there has always been a fashion-esque side to it. The 2013 Vanessa Hudgens flower-crown boho chic has now developed into true festival fashion. But, there is the question of has social media made Coachella more famous for the outfits that come with it than the actual performances?

It has become a calendar date for fashion lovers, sites, bloggers, brands, and influencers. It is the perfect opportunity for brands to use celebrities and influencers to promote their clothing items on social media. Some brands go the extra mile and have their own mini “No-Chella” festivals. Some of this years include Revolve, Adidas and Clinique.

Major sources, such as Los Angeles Times and Vogue Australia have already shared their favorite picks for Weekend 1. On social media, you can find people ranking all the celebrities’ and influencers’ outfits— essentially viewing from the couch and sharing their own personal takes. And, what is fascinating is that the outfits portrayed in these articles are different than the ones that are reviewed on TikTok.

As you can see, on TikTok the reviews are of celebrities and influencers that people may follow or show up on their For You Page. Whereas, Los Angeles Times includes people from various different of backgrounds and are highlighting the positives.

At the end of the day, everyone has different opinions. Some say that influencers like @AlixEarle are getting praise for taking Coachella boho fashion seriously and using the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone, while others say she tried too hard. It all comes down to our own personal opinions.

With my For You Page being full of Coachella glam and DIMY’s, here are some of my favorite outfits of the weekend…

  • Alix Earle channeling her inner early 2000s Christina Aguilera
  • Taryn Lamb giving boho golden fairy
  • Isabella Duffy styling vintage Jean Paul Gaultier skirt
  • Abelyn Salazar wearing the perfect summer matching set from my friends brand, Bella Venice

Excited to see what fashion Coachella Weekend 2 brings to the conversation!

  1. I can totally relate to this post because I am a huge fashion lover and think this is a perfect event to show off your style. Also being a music lover makes this the best of both worlds. Showing off unique looks and starting new trends add to the entire artistry that this event surrounds itself in. Adding 3-D art statues inside the venue gates also shows how Coachella’s creativity in all aspects.

  2. I loved the questions you are asking about this festival. In my opinion—Coachella has not been about the music in a long time. It is interesting to see the evolution of the style going from simple bikini tops and cut-off jeans to full designer outfits. The fashion of Coachella is something I look forward to almost as much as the Met Gala.
