5 Climate Change Activists You Should Follow on Social Media Right Now!

By Eleanor Tippett

So you’re looking to be a more sustainable consumer? Me too!

Start with the small things! It’s important to implement eco-friendly practices in your daily life by eating more plant based meals, reducing your plastic waste and boycotting fast-fashion. With Earth Day being celebrated tomorrow it is the perfect time to start being more sustainable. Nowadays we easily get wrapped up in the world of meme’s, trendy influencers and celebrities. The media you consume is a reflection of our interests, hobby’s and passions. With all the major events happening online, many climate activists tend to make use of online platforms such as The Solutions Project to project their thoughts and garner genuine attention towards social causes. It could be a wise option to check out such platforms while following these activists too.
Following climate change activists, who are not afraid to address taboo topics to protect both the planet and the people living on it, is important. This can help you expand your knowledge of climate change and what is being done to help the environment.
While researching social media’s impact on sustainable living and climate change activists, I came across an article that spoke about the harmful effects social media has on climate change activism. In this article on climate.org, the connection between social media and climate change polarization in the United States is discussed.
I suggest following these five female climate change activists on Instagram and other social media platforms to get your daily dose of eco-conscious and sustainable news!

  1. Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg) Like her bio says Greta Thunberg is a “18-year-old climate and environmental activist with Asperger’s.” At such a young age Thunberg is already considered one of the loudest voices in climate change. Born in Sweden she is known internationally for calling on world leaders to take action against climate change. Thunberg uses her platform to strike a conversation and call our planets youth to action in order to implement change.
  2. Leah Thomas (@greengirlleah) Founder of @intersectionalenvironmentalist on Instagram, Leah Thomas is a true eco-creative. She is passionate about advocating for and exploring the relationship between social justice and environmentalism. The Intersectional Environmental Platform is an outlet and media hub that aims to advocate for inclusivity and justice within environmental education and movements.
  1. Monika Poppy (@sustainablityiscool) Editor-in-Chief of the sustainable and ethically driven blog, Sustainability is Cool. Monika Poppy posts ethical fashion and make-up trends, decor and living necessities and yummy vegan snack recipes.
  2. Mikaela Loach (@mikaelaloach) A 22-year-old medical student at Edinburgh University, Mikaela Loach spends her free time blogging about ethical fashion and sustainable living. Loach is a co-host of The Yikes Podcast where she chats with friend and fellow climate change activist Josephine Becker. On the podcast topics such as vegan living, ethical clothing and how to make these movements accessible and inclusive are discussed.
  3. Josephine Becker (@treesnpeace) A vegan-minimalist from Scotland who is an activist against climate change and supports environmental justice. Josephine Becker is a zero-waste blogger who posts about political news and shares her favorite sustainable products. Becker often posts ways to help her followers reduce their plastic and carbon footprint.

Don’t wait! Take action today and start living a more sustainable life in every aspect.

  1. This is awesome! I think it’s so smart (and now obvious to me) that the more accounts like this you follow, the more information you’re processing each day. Even if it’s subconscious, I feel like it’s a positive to make the effort to follow and read information about climate every day. Love Greta!

  2. I love this post and the suggestions of new climate activists and influencers to follow. With Earth day being tomorrow, I’ve seen brands, like H&M for example, using this time to capitalize on the sustainability movement and inauthentically communicating this environmentally friendly narrative. Given this, I appreciate that you’ve suggested we follow these people with a more authentic voice and find those “who are not afraid [to] address taboo topics to protect both the planet and the people living on it.”

  3. Wow! This was a very interesting topic for me. Thank you so much for introducing me to these accounts. I will be following at least three of them. Great visuals to writing balance! Amazing blog post ?

  4. I’m always looking for new eco-friendly and sustainable people to follow online! I appreciate how you had a variety of people listed, and represented some POC and minorities! Their voices are often underrepresented in the sustainability space (and a lot of spaces).

  5. I love this blog post! I am going to go follow all of these climate activists! Great variety of female activists. I love that you include how you came across these activists too. Great job!

  6. I really enjoyed reading your post! I love Greta, I think what she has done at her age is amazing! I’m definitely going to follow some of these accounts. I am always trying to find ways to be more sustainable and I think following them could help!

  7. Hi Eleanor,
I really enjoyed reading your post and will definitely be checking out The Yikes Podcast! I am definitely starting small by reducing my waste and being conscious about my buying habits like fast fashion. I am always looking for recommendations when it comes to ethical and sustainable fashion options.
