During class on Tuesday May 5, 2015, we talked about where businesses should be on social media. Reflecting back on our first day of class, we brainstormed what we are most excited about as well as what hurdles we will face when building a solid foundation on social media platforms. Thinking from a businesses point of view, we thought excitement would stem from building an identity on the platform, learning how to engage and interact with consumers in an organic matter and in turn increase sales. Some barriers companies might encounter along the way are rising above the noise, connecting to consumers genuinely along with the biggest issue being time.
Before diving into the social world, it is important to identify what you as a business are trying to accomplish and who you are trying to reach. It is also very important to have a social media plan to stay on track. To do this, we made an outline of 5 major platforms : Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and Pinterest, and then evaluated the type of content suitable for each platform. It is important to remember that engagement, picture quality and content vary depending on the platform you are using. Though it might be easier, NEVER sync your content. Instead, find the sweet spot; remix and repurpose the information to make it fresh.
Though these are just the basics of finding your company on social media, there is a lot to do before making the step online. Take inventory of not only what you need but also what you have to work with; use your assets to your advantage. To assist in the transition, create an editorial calendar.
Key takeaways: – All platforms are different – NO SYNCING- Use an 8-12 week calendar cycle when planning
