Artificial intelligence (AI) is prevalent in many aspects of our lives, and the classroom is no exception. In recent years, colleges and universities have started to adopt AI technology to enhance the learning experience for students. College and university instructors encourage students to get comfortable with this technology given its popularity in the journalism and communications world. Students must engage with AI tools to aid them in their pre and post-grad careers. Here are some ways AI is being used in journalism and communication classroom settings:
- Chatbots: Colleges are using AI-powered chatbots to provide students with instant support and guidance. These chatbots can answer common questions, provide helpful resources and connect students with instructors or academic counselors when needed.
- Automated Writing: AI-powered tools can generate news stories or reports based on data and information given to them. Journalists can use this software to quickly create basic news reports on time sensitive topics such as natural disasters. This can free up time for journalists to focus on more in-depth reporting and analysis.
- Data Analysis: AI software can help communications professionals to analyze large data sets to uncover stories or trends. For example, a journalist could use AI to analyze research reports and primary data sources to identify prominent themes driving curated content creation. AI can also be used to synthesize data into charts or visual graphics for targeted audiences.
- Content Optimization: AI can analyze website traffic data and user behavior to optimize content. This includes tracking user engagement and identifying when is the best time to publish content to maximize exposure. AI can also use insights to suggest which social media channels are best for promoting certain content.
While AI can be a valuable tool for data analytics and content optimization, it cannot replace the creativity and critical thinking required for creating strategic campaigns. AI negates social and emotional factors that aid in the creation of impactful content. AI can provide an overview of a topic but it’s up to the strategist to conduct their own research to create tailored content. Students and professionals should use AI as a tool, not as a replacement for critical thinking. It’s important that we get comfortable using AI technology, however we must keep in mind the power of our own creative minds as well.

I enjoyed reading this and I think you thoroughly outlined all the uses of AI for students and communication professionals. I really liked your point that we need to balance the power of AI with our own creativity and critical thinking and I wonder if these skills will diminish as AI becomes more widely used.
