Karol G’s Photoshop Controversy: The Harmful Effects of Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Written by Isabel Alvarez.

Karol G, a Colombian singer and songwriter, recently expressed disappointment and frustration over her portrayal on GQ Mexico’s latest magazine cover. According to Karol G, the photo used on the cover was heavily edited without her approval. Making her face and body appear different from her natural appearance.

GQ Mexico published an interview with Karol G in English, later republished in GQ Mexico as part of the brand’s inaugural Global Creativity Awards, where Karol G is the only Latina up for the honor.

The singer shared her displeasure on Instagram and explained that she was upset with the number of edits made to her photo. She stated that she has been able to oversee the edits to the image. Still, the magazine “didn’t do anything about it, as if to look good I needed all those changes,” she added. She believed that the edits were disrespectful to her and to all women who struggle to feel comfortable with themselves despite society’s stereotypes.

Karol G is known for her stance on body positivity and self-love. Her album “Mañana Será Bonito” features lyrics that empower women to embrace their bodies and love themselves for who they are. She has previously been vocal about leaving her photos unedited and called out body shamers who criticized her choice.

Karol G’s experience with GQ Mexico’s magazine cover highlights the unrealistic beauty standards imposed on women by society. Unfortunately, girls and women constantly compare themselves to others, and the media’s portrayal of beauty only makes this problem worse. Photoshopping artists to make them look better sends a message that natural beauty is not good enough, and it puts undue pressure on women to look a certain way.

We must start talking about this issue and taking action to change it. We must support and uplift women who challenge unrealistic beauty standards and promote body positivity and self-love.

One way to do this is by supporting companies prioritizing diversity and natural beauty in their advertisements and editorial content. Another way to promote positive change is by conversing with young girls about body positivity and self-love. Parents and educators should empower young girls to embrace their natural beauty and help them understand that looking different from others is okay. We can also support organizations that promote body positivity and self-love among young girls.

It’s time to celebrate the diversity of beauty and empower women to love themselves for who they are.

  1. It is so strange how they kept the cover the same even after Karol spoke up and talked about it. You would think that they would prioritize the talent over the costs to reprint because of all of the backlash they would receive. It’s hard to believe they even are thinking of other talent who could possibly be on the cover who may not want to anymore. This is a good conversation that Karol started because it inspires others to stand up and call out companies for issues like this. I wonder what will happen with other artists on the GQ Mexico cover in the future.

  2. This is a great topic. It amazes me how awful the beauty industry can be at times. The fact that Karol went out of her way to question the altered edits to her photos makes me respect her for not wanting to portray an unrealistic image to her fans. You’ve provided some great ways we can all help to bring positive change to the beauty industry to embrace natural beauty and promote body positivity. There’s definitely a lot of work that still needs to be done.

  3. This was an interesting read. I’ve never heard of Karol G. but reading that she is known for her stance on body positivity and self-love, and that she was brave enough to make a statement against the magazine cover, I’m interested in listening to her. I also liked that you provided ways we can support/uplift women who challenge beauty standards.

  4. I never really paid attention much towards Karol G, but after reading this article, her stance on body positivity and self-love is genuinely inspiring. Becoming part of the change is hard. I know that Kim Kardashian and her family have set unrealistic body standards and many have fell unhealthy diets and extreme exercises to reach to their body. Kim is saying that now that she has kids, she wants to change the way she has set the beauty standards. I’m glad that celebrities are stepping up and challenging beauty standards.
